Gentle Reminders

Being Reminded of God’s Truth

God is Holy, Holy, Holy: Meaning and Importance
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high.” Leviticus 26:13

In reading Leviticus, I am astounded at the number of times God reminds the Israelites of three things:

  1. He reminds them multiple times to remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy.
  2. He reminds them and warns them multiple times to not create or worship idols of any kind.
  3. And the reason why they are to obey all His commands? God CONTINUALLY reminds them of His holiness and authority. “I am the LORD your God.” “I am the LORD.”

Leviticus 22:32-33 says, “Do not profane my holy name. I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the LORD, who makes you holy and who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD.”

Again and again and again, God declares Himself LORD–holy, sovereign, awesome in power–the only One who makes us holy. I urge you to open up the Book of Leviticus and underline all the times the statement “I am the LORD” is declared.

Why the constant reminder? Why did the Lord choose to re-state the Sabbath laws and the command to worship Him alone more than once? Why, after giving Moses each law, does He choose to re-declare Himself as LORD again and again?

I think of a child. A parent of a young toddler must remind his or her child to brush their teeth everyday. A parent holds their child’s hand while crossing the street, because that child might not always think to look both ways. A mom warns her young daughter multiple times to stay in eyesight at the park, so she won’t get snatched away. Even parents of an older child say, “Text me when you make it to your friend’s house” every time they leave home. These reminders are not to bore us to tears. They are meant to keep us safe. They are meant to remind us how much we are loved and cherished and protected and wanted. They are meant to mature us.

I am like that child, needing those constant reminders from the Lord that I don’t have it all together. Just today, in my prayer, I cried out to the Lord, asking why I am always needing to remind myself to cast my cares upon Him? “When will it finally click?” I prayed. “When will I finally learn not to worry and just rest in You? You, who are always faithful. Will I ever get to the point where I don’t need the reminders? When will it become second nature to rest first instead of worry?”

And then God answered.

I need the reminders in His Word every day, because His Word waters my soul. You see, in this present day, it’s not that the Sabbath Day is a ritual where we must be a couch potato one day of the week. The Sabbath is not a day of the week. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. And if He dwells in our hearts, we have His rest within us, as well as the reminders of His Word that are a balm for our souls.

I need continual reminders of Truth, because each day is a pick-up-my-cross-and-follow-Jesus kind of day. I need continual reminders of who God is–holy, sovereign, awesome in power–because it’s in those sweet reminders that I draw my strength. I draw my strength from His strength! My peace and my joy come from Him alone. And that worry, that anxiety that still rears its ugly head because I’m still stuck in this flesh until the Lord takes me home, is a constant sign that apart from Him I can do nothing, but WITH Him…nothing is impossible.

God reminds us of His promises, His goodness, His commands, His character, because He loves us more than we will ever be able to comprehend. He wants what’s best for us. He desires to protect us from the enemy, the world, and ourselves. Without the covering of His Word, the understanding that often comes from multiple reminders, we so easily become unstable.

Dear Friend, if God is reminding you of a passage of scripture or a description/name of His character or a promise or a command over and over again, let it soak in. Dive into His river of delight, meant to restore you and give you understanding. After all, if He is the Lord your God (and He is), then you are His treasure.
